Reasons to Avoid Collagen Supplements

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body that plays a vital role in maintaining the structural integrity of tissues and organs. However, for individuals diagnosed with cancer, an overabundance of collagen within the tumor microenvironment can inadvertently support tumor progression and metastasis.

Recent evidence indicates that, beyond serving as structural elements, collagens are a significant source of nutrients and play crucial roles in growth control and immune regulation. In the tumor microenvironment, collagen undergoes remodeling, leading to changes in its composition and structure. These alterations can influence cancer cell behavior in several ways.

  • Enhanced Cancer Cell Survival: Research indicates that cancer cells can exploit collagen-consuming stromal cells to support their own survival. This interaction creates a microenvironment conducive to tumor growth.

  • Immune Evasion: Collagen can modulate the function of various immune cells within tumors, such as tumor-associated macrophages and T cells. This modulation can suppress the body's anti-tumor immune response, allowing cancer cells to evade detection and destruction.

  • Facilitated Metastasis: Alterations in collagen structure can create pathways that enable cancer cells to migrate more easily, promoting metastasis. The remodeled extracellular matrix provides tracks along which cancer cells can move to invade surrounding tissues.

Implications for Collagen Supplementation

Given collagen's potential to influence tumor growth and behavior, I highly recommend that those who have or who have had cancer, avoid collagen supplementation.
